Rev. Gerald Howland Kirby, age 90, passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2018 at Morristown Hamblen Healthcare System. Gerald was born in Cincinnati, OH to Millie and Howland Kirby on June 15, 1928. Gerald was a graduate of Carson Newman College where he met his wife Barbara Anne Whitten and they were married in 1950. Gerald taught at Morristown High School East for two years before entering Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA where he prepared for ministry in the Presbyterian Church. On summer breaks, he served as pastor to the Whitesburg Presbyterian Church and upon retirement in 1996 returned to Morristown.
After graduation, from Columbia Seminary, Gerald served the Presbyterian Church in Pelzer, SC, as associate pastor in Rome, GA and associate pastor in Arlington, VA and retired from the Pastorate in Norfolk, VA in 1996. Always the teacher, he taught weekly bible studies to adults as well as young people in all the churches he served in addition to his weekly sermons.
In addition to his wife Barbara, Gerald is survived by his son, Reverend Charles Daniel (Patricia) Kirby, grandson, Jesse and wife Jenny, granddaughter, Emily Kirby and two great-granddaughters, Elizabeth and Eleanor of Candler, NC.
A memorial service will be held in the East Chapel of Allen Funeral Homeat 2pm Friday, July 13. The family will receive friends after the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to your favorite charity.
