Barbara “Jean” Shaver, known to many as “Cookie”, age 90, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at Heritage Center Nursing Home. She was born on July 9, 1934, in Portland, Tennessee, a daughter of the late Charlie and Vera Cook. Jean moved to the Morristown area to attend Carson Newman College. She remained a resident of Morristown and worked for Parks Belk and Hodge Electric Company. She was a member of Trinity Methodist where she and her husband “Wally” were two of the original members and she played the organ for over 50 years.
She was a true woman of faith, devoted to God in every way, living a life poured out in service to Him. Her life was a constant act of love, serving others as a reflection of her love for the Lord. She was always delivering meals “from the church” to those who were sick, hurting, or in need, often rushing out the door to drop off food for shut-ins before sitting down to her own dinner.
Jean was a fierce prayer warrior. The moment she heard of a need, she’d pick up the phone, rallying her prayer chain with unwavering commitment. She didn’t just promise to pray—she prayed fervently. By her chair, she kept a list of names, lifting each one up faithfully.
Her love for her family was boundless. Despite her endless acts of service, she was a daily presence in our home, helping in countless ways—always stepping in to support Amy as she cared for Leigh Ann, Rachael and Charlie. She and Wally opened their home to foster children and welcomed all the neighborhood kids with open arms.
Jean never held a grudge or made an enemy; she was a beacon of forgiveness, radiating a joyful spirit that uplifted everyone around her.
We can only imagine the countless stars in her crown, and we have no doubt she was greeted with, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, Vera and Charlie Cook; her devoted husband of fifty years, Charles Wallace (Wally) Shaver; her cherished grandson, James Charles (Charlie) Mangum; her siblings, Kenneth (Louise) Cook, Christine (JL) Henson, Evelyn (“Tommy”) Thomas, Delores Cook Rutherford (Dean), and Joan Bandy. Jean is survived by her loving daughter, Amy Greene; her granddaughters, Leigh Ann (Mitch) Evans and Rachael (Dave) Carpenter; her five treasured great-grandchildren, Hensley and Reagan Evans, and Charleigh, Ava, and Luke Carpenter; son-in law Larry Mangum; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, friends, her dear neighbor Marilyn Purkey, and her cherished church family. Jean’s life was a testament to her unwavering devotion to God and her boundless love for others, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Receiving Friends will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM, with funeral service to follow at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at Trinity Methodist Church. Graveside Services will be held in Jarnigan Cemetery on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at 10:00 AM.
