Bertie Mae Howerton, age 90, of Rutledge, passed away at her home on Friday, January 2, 2026. Bertie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was a faithful member of Helton Springs Baptist Church. She lived out her faith every day with her servant’s heart and as a beacon of God’s grace to her family and all that knew her.
Bertie is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Elmer Howerton; parents, Thomas and Ruth Hodge; siblings, Raymond Hodge, John Hodge, and Katherine Brantley.
She is survived by her children, Pat (Earl) Watson, Larry (Lisbeth) Howerton, and Terry (Jean) Howerton; grandchildren, Kristie (Louie) Patterson, Valerie (Elton) Evans, Neil (Amanda) Howerton, Tori (Josh) Belk, and Allie Howerton; great grandchildren, Landon and Garrett Patterson and Grace and Amelia Howerton; sister-in-law, Nadine (Troy) Roach; as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Smoky Mountain Hospice, especially Nurse Patrick, for his special attention and compassion for our mother. Also, we would like to recognize Stephanie Brooks, her caregiver, who gave her love, friendship and helped take care of her every need.

Please help us celebrate Bertie’s life from 5 – 7 PM, Tuesday, January 6, 2026, in the East Chapel of Allen Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 7 PM, with Rev. Ted Phillips officiating. Graveside services will be held at 11 AM, Wednesday, January 7, 2026, in Adriel Cemetery.
