Betty Jack (Shipley) Courtney, 92, entered the Gates of Glory Monday morning, December 8, 2025. She was a faithful member of Rocky Point Baptist Church where she served in many roles – from pianist to church clerk to GA leader. She looked forward to going to church every time the doors were open. Betty was a talented seamstress, doing alterations for years for Dawson’s Men’s and Women’s Shops. She was a good cook, too, known for her peanut butter cookies, sugar cookies, and coconut pound cakes with caramel icing.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Dennis Murray; son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Sonya Courtney. She dearly loved her granddaughter, Sydney Courtney. Betty is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Jimmie Lowe; plus several nieces, nephews, and cousins, too
Preceded in death by her husband Howard E. Courtney; parents, Jim and Ruth Shipley; brothers and their wives, J. T. and Reba Shipley; John and Aline Shipley.
Visitation will be from 5 – 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 10, at Allen Funeral Home with the funeral immediately following. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 11, at Cedar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Russellville.
The family extends their love and appreciation to Betty’s sitters and the staff of Smoky Mountain Hospice. Donations may be made to the Building Fund at Rocky Point Baptist Church; 7425 Early Road; Whitesburg, TN 37891.
