Charles Gray, Jr. Obituary

Charles R. Gray Jr., age 92, was born on July 11, 1933, and passed away peacefully at his home on January 13, 2026.  He was always known to have a joke, a story or some way to make someone laugh or smile.

Charles was a faithful member of Robertson Creek Baptist Church, where his dedication was evident through over 40 years of perfect attendance in Sunday School. His faith was a guiding force throughout his life.

After honorably serving his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, Charles attended trade school for radio and television repair. Upon returning home, he began a lifelong career with Magnavox and Philips Consumer Electronics, working in Jefferson City, Morristown, and Greeneville. This was the only company he worked for after his military service, remaining loyal and dedicated throughout his career until retirement. He was also a devoted farmer, working alongside his beloved wife and her brother as they operated a small cattle and tobacco farm for many years.

Charles was an avid sports fan and played baseball and softball for many years. He shared his love of the game by coaching youth baseball and softball teams and umpiring games, influencing countless young athletes. In his later years, he enjoyed watching sports and classic westerns.

He was deeply committed to Freemasonry, serving as a member and Past Master of Bulls Gap Lodge No. 764 and Warrensburg Lodge No. 631 with honorary membership and many other lodges. His dedication led him to attend lodge meetings in four different states and approximately 95 different lodges.  He also was 32-degree Scottish Rite and was an avid supporter of the Shriner’s hospital.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Earnestine H. Gray; father, Charles R. Gray Sr.; mother, Hazel K. (Hoard) Gray; sister, Jewel Douglas; and her husband, Carl Burnette.

He is survived by his son, Richard (Rick) V. Gray; daughter-in-law, Freda S. Gray, whom he loved as his own daughter; granddaughters, whom he adored and loved with all his heart, Jordan E. (Gray) Long and her husband Paul Long, and Mallory G. Gray; brother, John T. Gray and wife Luz Gray; along with several nieces and nephews.

Receiving of friends will be held on Friday, January 16th, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, in the East Chapel of Allen Funeral Home, with a Masonic funeral and service to follow.  Interment will take place on Saturday, January 17th, at 11 AM, in Bent Creek Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Bent Creek Cemetery: P.O. Box 144, Whitesburg, TN 37891, where Charles served as a trustee for many years, or to Shriners Children’s Hospital.
