Delmas Coffey Obituary

Delmas E. Coffey, 79, of Morristown passed away Tuesday, December 22, 2020, at UT Medical Center. Knoxville, TN.  He was a devoted husband for 49 years to his wife Delores Dearing Coffey as well as a beloved father to his two girls, Niki Michelle (Richie) Goforth, and Kelli Rene Coffey.  He was also a very loving Papaw to his grandson, Graham Cole Goforth.

He professed faith in Jesus Christ at an early age and was a long time member of Buffalo Trail Baptist Church, Morristown, where he served as deacon, taught a couples Sunday School Class which he dearly loved, and served in many other areas of the church. He was known as a people person and a good listener.   He had a heart for missions and went on mission trips to Michigan, Ohio and Middle Tennessee, to help build churches.  He made several trips to Romania to work with the Roma people group and assisted in building two churches there.  He was active in the Nolichucky Baptist Association Disaster Relief chain saw crew, being one of the first responders to Katrina.

He was retired after 30 years as an educator in the Hamblen County School System.  Beginning his career at Sherwood Elementary School and retired as a math teacher at Meadowview Middle School.   He loved to farm raising beef cattle, and growing a garden so he could share his produce with friends and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents, G.B. and Louisa (Barker) Coffey, brothers; Virgil, Lester, Frank, Corbett and Donald Coffey and sisters, Elva Wolfe, Glatha Grey and Elsie Chippendale.

He is survived by his wife, Delores; daughters, Niki and Kelli; grandson, Graham; two sisters, Christine Shipley and Gertrude Rymer; and several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes for everyone to remain safe and healthy, therefore, no visitation will be held.  In the future when a vaccine allows, or when the pandemic subsides, a celebration of his life will be held at Buffalo Trail Baptist Church.  At that time, we will welcome friends, community members, and loved ones to gather to share the love that Delmas so freely shared with you.

A private, family graveside service will be held Tuesday, December 29, 2020, in Hamblen Memory Gardens with Dr. Keith Mowery officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that those who wish to do so, may give donations to Buffalo Trail Baptist Church: Romania missions; or Nolachucky Baptist Disaster Relief in his honor.

Allen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
