Glenda Hammond Obituary

Glenda Kimbrough Hammond, 75, of Morristown, went to be with the Lord January 31, 2020 at home with her family.

She was a private person that never let a health challenge define her and rarely shared those challenges with anyone.  She disliked gossip. Therefore, we will share that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001, had a reoccurrence in 2013 at Stage IV, congestive heart failure in 2015 and another reoccurrence of cancer in January.  Glenda accepted each challenge with a focus on living every day to the fullest with a happy heart. Her determination and love for life along with her strong belief and faith in the Lord overruled any diagnosis.  She often said “each morning God opens your eyes, remember He has blessed you with another day.  Live that day to the fullest and chose happiness.”  She did just that.

Glenda loved to cook and an incredible cook she was.  Sitting down and having family meals were important; and Sunday lunches after church were a staple.  Too many great dishes to mention but her family will forever be trying to replicate her biscuits and gravy, cornbread and her famous Better than Chocolate Cake.

She cherished time spent with her family.  Beach vacations and special trips with her daughters and granddaughter were some of her favorite times.  A member of First Baptist since she was 10 years old, Glenda loved her church and church family very much.  She greatly enjoyed the time she dedicated to the church in various roles.

Her 3 daughters were the most important part of her life.  That is until the arrival of her granddaughter.  Her daughters then accepted their 2nd place ranking to the one and only Lara AnnaBeth.

If you knew her, you loved her.  Glenda accepted people for who they were and was a friend to and of many.  Her constant smile and positive outlook provided sunshine and warmth even on the cloudiest day.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Beatrice Bartley Kimbrough and Burnace Kimbrough; brother, Phillip Larry Kimbrough and nephew, Stephen Larry Hodge.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, John W. Hammond; daughters, Elizabeth Hammond of Morristown, Emily Runyon (Taulby) of Cleveland, TN, Johanna Hoover (John) of Knoxville; granddaughter, Lara AnnaBeth Runyon; sister, Patricia Hodge (Steve) of Morristown; constant companion, Charlie (her Jack Russell); granddogs, Speck and Woody; and a host of family and friends.
We will celebrate Glenda at 6pm Friday, February 7th, at First Baptist Church of Morristown in the fellowship hall.  Come as you are with happy memories and a joyful spirit.  She would want this to be a celebration, not sadness.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Baptist Church of Morristown or specifically, The Timothy Initiative.
