James Gary Mitchell, 68, of Morristown, had an appointment with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday afternoon, August 5, 2024. James passed suddenly of an apparent heart attack. He was a devoted Christian and was of the Methodist faith. James was employed by MAHLE, Inc. in Morristown, TN for several years before retiring.
James was born and raised in Norfolk, VA to the late Mr. and Mrs. George W. and Mary Gill Mitchell.
He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Wanda Kaye Norwood Mitchell; brother-in-law, Steve Norwood of Athens, TN; sister and brother-in-law, Deborah and Jim Cody; nephew, Joshua Cody, of White Pine, TN.
During his high school years, he played the trumpet in Northview Marching Band. Following graduation, he attended Tidewater Community College where he majored in music. Realizing pursuing a career in music was not for him, James turned to his other passion, mechanics. He was accepted into the Newport-News Ship Building Yard apprentice program where he earned his Machinist license. After several years, he decided to further his education and earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, TN.
Most people who knew James was not aware of his many hobbies which included bass fishing (Confederate Bass Masters of Virginia) where he won at least one tournament; passionate for collecting new and used books, stamp collecting and buying and selling knives at knife shows. James was a “football fanatic”, a big fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans and the University of Tennessee “Vols”. He loved animals and was a “cat daddy” to numerous fur-babies; most recently, Callie, Scottie and a stray cat he named Rusty.
Private graveside services were held on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Athens, TN. Reverend Mark Reedy officiated the service. Honorary pallbearers were Joshua Cody, Jim Cody and Steve Norwood.
