James “Jim” Leslie Woods, 84, of Morristown, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2024, at Parkwest Medical Center with his family by his side. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He always had a smile on his face and an infectious laugh that brightened everyone’s day. He had a gift for singing and will be remembered for using that talent to sing praises to the Lord. He was a great husband.
Jim was saved at a young age. He was a Loyal member of Oak Grove Primitive Baptist Church for over 50 years, serving many of those years as a deacon of the church. He was in the graduating class of Whitesburg High School in 1958. Jim served his country through the United States Army as Private First Class with an honorable discharge in 1965.
He went to vocational school to be a mechanist. Jim served with the Morristown Hamblen Rescue Squad. He worked hard throughout his life at Jeffery Chain, Enka, P.E.T. and Mahle where he retired. After retirement, he worked as a security guard for Rockwell.
Jim was born in Whitesburg on December 9, 1939, to the late William McKinley Woods and Ella Mae Wice Woods.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ada Woods; children, Pamela Dawn (Marty) Cantwell, Jaime Christopher (Kim) Woods, and Karla Renee (Andy) Taylor; grandchildren, Derrick (Christina) Cantwell, Brad (Logan) Cantwell, Lashae (Adam) Lamb, Brittany (Danny) Ivy, and Hunter Furches; sisters, Dorthy Thomason Akard (Morristown),Betty Loveday (Dandridge), and Emma Woods (Whitesburg); brothers-in-law, Sonny (Janet) Lawson and George (Christy) Lawson; sisters-in-law, Barbara (Jim) Murphy and Sue Marrisett; as well as ten great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, R.T. Woods (Kansas City, MO), Bill Woods (Phoenix City, AL), Ed Woods (Madisonville); and sister, Margaret “Tensie” Stephenson (White Pine).
The family would like to give recognition to his special neighbors, Gary and Shelley Bailey and Mike and Mary Lou Hayes.
Jim sang “Sweet Beulah Land” and “Leavin’ on My Mind” often and now he is at rest and no longer homesick. He was a kind, caring, and loving man who will be missed dearly.
The family will receive friends from 5PM – 7PM on Thursday, August 22, 2024, in the East Chapel of Allen Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 7PM, with Elder William “Bill” LaFollette and Elder Chris Henson officiating. Graveside services will be held on Friday, August 23, 2024, at 11AM, in Hamblen Memory Gardens.
