John “Jack” Wood Cartwright, 90 years old, of Morristown, passed away peacefully, of natural causes, on March 11, in Signal Mountain, where he had lived since 2020. He is fondly remembered as a trustworthy and sociable man, who loved the company of friends and family and who assumed the responsibilities of life with wisdom and courage
Born in Oak Park, Illinois, Mr. Cartwright grew up in Winchester, Tennessee; Columbus, Georgia; Pinehurst, North Carolina; and River Forest, Illinois. Following his military service in the Korean War as a corporal in the United States Army, he graduated from Culver Stockton College, in Canton, Missouri, where he met his beloved wife of 63 years, “Patsy,” with whom he raised two daughters.
As a signal accomplishment of his fifty years with Morris Wood Tool Co., Inc., from which he retired as president and co-owner, Mr. Cartwright led the relocation of the century-old manufacturing firm from Chicago to Morristown, where it prospered for an additional 45 years. He loved his adopted town and sought to contribute to the life of the community. He was a long-time member of the Kiwanis Club and served in various local organizations.
Mr. Cartwright is preceded in death by his father, Col. H.H. Cartwright, of St. Jean-Cap-Ferrat, France; mother, Annabeth Wood Cartwright, of Morristown; daughter, Virginia Cartwright Goan, of Morristown; brother, William Wood Cartwright, and wife, Patricia Hardin Cartwright.
He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Cartwright, and her husband, Stephen Neil Austin, of Signal Mountain; granddaughter, Miller Beth Goan, of Murfreesboro; grandson, Jackson Lee Goan, of Morristown; as well as devoted nephews, nieces, and in-laws.
